How to Convert HEIC Photos to JPG

HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality โ€” great for phone storage, but problematic when sharing with Windows users, uploading to websites, or sending to apps that don't support it. Converting to JPG ensures universal compatibility.

Why iPhones Use HEIC

Apple adopted HEIC because it achieves roughly twice the compression of JPG at the same visual quality. A 4MB JPG photo is typically 2MB as HEIC. For phones with thousands of photos, this significantly affects storage. The downside is compatibility โ€” Windows requires a separate codec, and many web platforms and older apps don't accept HEIC uploads.

What Happens During Conversion

Your HEIC photo is decoded and re-encoded as JPEG. Colours, exposure, and detail are preserved. The output file will typically be larger than the HEIC original while looking visually identical. GPS metadata and camera settings are preserved where possible.

Change Your iPhone Setting Instead

If you regularly need JPG, change your iPhone camera permanently: go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and select Most Compatible. Your iPhone will capture photos as JPG from that point. For existing HEIC photos already on your phone, use our converter.

HEIC Compatibility Issues Explained

Since Apple introduced HEIC as the default iPhone camera format in 2017, compatibility issues have been a constant frustration. Windows 10 and 11 require a separate codec download to open HEIC files. Most web browsers cannot display HEIC images inline. Many online forms and upload portals reject HEIC files. Social media platforms sometimes convert HEIC automatically but with unpredictable quality results. Converting to JPG before sharing eliminates all these compatibility issues instantly and reliably.

Changing Your iPhone Camera Settings

If you regularly need JPG photos instead of HEIC, you can change your iPhone camera setting permanently. Go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and select Most Compatible. Your iPhone will capture photos as JPG from that point forward. This uses slightly more storage space per photo but eliminates all compatibility issues when sharing, uploading, or sending photos to people and platforms that do not support the HEIC format.

Trusted by Students, Professionals, and Businesses

From university students working on assignments to HR professionals processing documents, from small business owners managing invoices to software developers working with data formats, Quickly.fit tools are used daily by people across every profession and every industry. The common thread is the need for reliable, fast, professional results without the cost and complexity of dedicated desktop software subscriptions that are not justified for occasional or moderate use.

Constantly Improved and Maintained

Quickly.fit is actively maintained and regularly updated to ensure compatibility with the latest file formats, browser standards, and security requirements. When browsers update their capabilities, our tools are updated to take advantage of improvements. When new file format versions become common, our converters are updated to handle them. User feedback directly shapes what gets improved next. This ongoing investment in quality is what separates a genuinely useful tool from one that works when first built but gradually becomes unreliable as the web evolves around it.
