HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It produces smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality — great for phone storage, but problematic when sharing with Windows users, uploading to websites, or sending to apps that don't support it. Apple adopted HEIC because it achieves roughly twice the compression of JPG at the same visual quality. A 4MB JPG photo is typically 2MB as HEIC.
