How to Resize Images Online

Resizing an image changes its pixel dimensions โ€” making it smaller for web use, or scaling it to specific proportions for social media, printing, or profile pictures. Set exact pixel dimensions or a percentage scale, with an option to lock the aspect ratio to prevent stretching.

Resize vs Compress

Resizing changes dimensions (width x height in pixels). Compressing reduces file size without necessarily changing dimensions. For web use, do both: resize to the dimensions your website actually displays, then compress to minimise file size. There is no benefit in serving a 3000px wide image for a 600px display slot.

Locking the aspect ratio adjusts the second dimension automatically when you change the first, preventing distortion. Unlocking lets you stretch an image to exact dimensions โ€” useful when a platform requires a specific size and slight distortion is acceptable.

Resolution and Display Quality

A common misconception is that bigger images always look better. In reality, displaying a 4000px wide image in a 400px container wastes bandwidth and slows loading without any visual benefit to the visitor. The browser downloads the full large image and then shrinks it during rendering. Resizing the image to 800px for retina screens before uploading achieves identical visual quality at a fraction of the file size. Always resize images to close to their intended display size before uploading to any website.

Standard Platform Image Dimensions

Different platforms have very specific dimension requirements. A Facebook cover photo is 820 by 312 pixels. A LinkedIn banner is 1584 by 396 pixels. A Twitter header is 1500 by 500 pixels. An Instagram post is 1080 by 1080 pixels square or 1080 by 1350 pixels portrait. A website hero image is typically 1920 by 1080 pixels.
